For the first time the people in Sri Lanka will have the opportunity to witness a large number of Buddhist decorations turned out by using Information and Communication Technology.The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) says that this opportunity will be available to the public at the ‘Vesak 2009’ international Vesak celebration at BMICH, Colombo.

The celebration that will be held from May 09 to 11 will be sponsored by the National Film Corporation, the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka and the Light of Asia Foundation.

A main attraction of this Vesak celebration will be the Buddhist pandals of a new genre constructed using Information Technology. A relic dome (Dagaba) constructed using water and electric bulbs too will be on show at this celebration.
ICTA’s Chief Operating Officer Reshan Dewapura says that computer-produced ‘e-Vesak’ greeting cards and short Buddhist movies produced with the help of mobile phones will be on display at the ‘Vesak 2009’ celebration.
In addition, an international short Buddhist film festival too will be held at the BMICH.

Furthermore the public will also be able to surf web-sites containing information about Buddhism.Mr. Dewapura points out that one of the sub-goals of the e-Sri Lanka initiative is the effective use of Information Technology to safeguard Buddhist heritage as well as to take it to the world community in an attractive manner. Mr. Dewapura added that ICTA had already been able to upload the most renowned historical book, namely, “the Five Hundred and Fifty Jataka Tales” on to the internet
